Design of Structural Foundations

General Design Guidance Code Requirements BRAB Design WRI Design PTI Design

In a deep foundation, the slab is supported on deep piers that carry loads below the zone where movement of the soil from seasonal changes in moisture is expected. In general, a deep foundation is expected to exhibit superior performance to a slab-on-grade foundation.  Several types of deep foundations are available, including:
  1. Slab-on-grade with piers.
  2. Elevated structural slab with a crawlspace.
In general, design of deep foundations is outside of the scope of this website, and is addressed by SlabWorks™. One exception is the heave conditions of a slab-on-grade with piers, which must be designed to either structurally resist uplift forces or behavior as a stiffened slab-on-grade and control deflections.
